Full Time RV Living - Evans Escapades - Gearing up for Christmas Excitement!

What a difference a week makes.

After a quiet, and uneventful time last week, this week has been hopping. . .

Dave’s sister was performing at the Houston Heritage Society’s Candlelight Festival at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston, and got us free tickets for Saturday night. . . thanks Sis!

IMGP1261

It was really great, and we highly recommend that you make plans to attend if you are in the area at Christmas time. . .Sam Houston Park is located on Buffalo Bayou with the downtown skyscrapers creating a backdrop.

IMGP1255

There was a huge crowd, and a long line waiting to hear the Houston Boy’s Choir perform in this old German Church. . .

IMGP1262

The boy’s choir has been performing at this event for over forty years. . .

IMGP1253

Carolers entertaining the crowd

IMGP1265

This gentleman was set up on the porch of an old log cabin, letting the kids sign their names with a quill and ink. . .they really seemed to be enjoying the experience. . .

IMGP1247

There are several different eras of Houston History represented in the restored homes in the park. . .this is the Staiti Home, circa 1913. . .and was where our sis was performing. . .they told me I couldn’t take pics inside. . .but here is a You Tube Clip of the performance. . .Mary is the gorgeous one on the far right. . .it’s only a couple of minutes long!

Now on to the rest of our week. . .

It’s time for the Kid’s Christmas Drama at church. . .so of course, we want to help wherever we can. . .which just happens to be the props department. . .

IMGP1268

One of the Dads did the cutouts. . .so this is what we started with. . .

IMGP1271

and here was the finished product. . .it doesn't look like it in this pic, but it really is painted a beautiful gingerbread caramel color

some of the Moms were going to finish glittering it up and such. . .

IMGP1269

While I worked on the Gingerbread House,

Dave took on the Castle and did a really great job. . .

I wish I could show you, but my pic of the finished product didn’t come out. . .

I’ll take more Sunday Morning, so you can see how wonderful it turned out. . .

In addition to painting props, this week,

our son celebrated his 35th birthday, (good grief)

so on Wednesday night we had all of them over for soup and cornbread that I had made, and a delicious homemade cheesecake that his better half Lori had made. . .

it was wonderful, and worth every delectable calorie. . .

I can assure you that these poor old bodies are not used to all that exercise,

and we are feeling it today. . .

so we are taking it easy until our grandson’s basketball game this evening. . .

check in next week to see how he did!

Full Time RV Living–Tips and Tricks–Getting packages on time!

Today I want to share an excerpt from a fellow RV’ers blog. . .

This was written by Greg White – Our Rv Adventures

And now for another installment of . . .

Things Every RV’er should have:

Today I’m going to tell you about a service, and not a gadget. It’s Amazon Prime, a special service from Amazon.com, and we find it invaluable while traveling full-time.

The bad news is that it costs $80 a year, but the good news is that if you order a lot, or want to order a lot from Amazon it will save you money.

But in our case, we also like the time it saves us. Time, as in how long it takes to order and receive something.

And Amazon sells pretty much everything.

Having never heard of Amazon Prime. . .I decided to check it out.  Getting packages delivered in time has been an obstacle since we have been fulltiming. . .so I decided to give it a shot.  I am really, really liking it.

We normally stay put at least three or four days. . .so far, everything I’ve ordered has shown up as advertised.

Hope you find this info useful,

Janice

Full Time RV Travel–RV Park Reviews–Lazy G RV Park–College Station TX

Disclaimer:
These are RV Parks and Resorts that we have stayed in across the country.
As you know, things change, management changes, etc. . . so verify any information, rates, and so on before you make a reservation.

These were the conditions at the time of our visit. . .

We stayed at the Lazy G RV Park in College Station  located right on Hwy 6, south of College Station, for the month of November 2011. . .

IMGP1167

Lazy G RV Park

16554 S. Hwy 6
College Station, TX
77845

(979) 690-8658

IMGP1165
We had a fairly good sized pull though spot for $395 for the month. . .pads are gravel, and fairly level. . .all hookups are centrally located center. . .so easy to access.

The park is a member of TACO – Texas Association of Campground Owners. . .which will get you a 10% discount on daily rates. . .they accept cash, checks and credit cards (NOT American Express though)

I was unable to determine if they were members of any other discount programs. . .as best as I could tell. . .they are not.

The highway was very close. . .within 200 yards of our space. . .so if that will bother you, I suggest requesting a spot in the rear of the park.

It also seemed to us that the front spaces were reserved for overnite  and weekend stays. . .since it was Texas A&M FootBall Season, we seemed to have the party groups coming in next to us on those weekends. . .you never heard so much door slamming. . .and kids squealing. . .thankfully all was quiet during the week.

IMGP1158

This is the rear camping area. . .as you can see, there is no shade. . .however, I am sure it is much quieter back there, as you do not have the highway noise, or the traffic going in and out.   One vehicle in particular with a very loud exhaust seemed to go in and out at least 10 times per day. . we did find it extremely annoying, especially late at night.

This seems to be a working man’s park, so it stayed pretty full the entire month we were there.   They also provide RV and Boat Storage as you can see in the rear, behind the camping area.

IMGP1163
There was a large laundry area. . .three washers and three dryers. . .$1.50 each per load.  Also a comfy place to sit, both inside and outside.

IMGP1162

The four restroom facilities, and shower houses were self contained and private, which is a plus.  The one I looked into had been smoked in. . .even though there was a huge NO SMOKING sign. . .and the shower looked as though it could use a dose of bleach. . .but overall, very adequate for those times a shower house is needed.

As stated earlier, this is a working man’s park, so no frills. . .pool or spa. . .but great monthly rate.  . . not really sure I would be willing to pay the $32 nightly rate for 50 amp service though.
IMGP1160

This is the pet area. . .I did read in the rules that all pets were to be on leash at all times.  I did not find that rule to be enforced. . .as I observed several animals being allowed to roam free.  I guess the owners feel as long as they are outside, their pet should be okay.  .  .

Shopping is easily accessible. . .Lowe’s and HEB Grocery are at the next exit. . .Walmart is within five minutes or so. . .by the time you make it to Walmart, you are almost to the business district, where every store and restaurant imaginable is available.

The mall is huge, and easily accessible from Hwy 6 as is Sam’s Club, Academy, Home Depot. . .you name it. . .if you need it, you can find it in the area.

Texas A&M Campus Tours are available. . .be sure to check the website as scheduling in advance is recommended.

RV Parking and hookups are available on the campus. . .please contact the  Texas A&M Transportation Dept. for more info. . .

No trip to College Station would be complete without a visit to the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, also located on the Texas A&M Campus.

We did not eat out too often this trip. . .Dave was teaching classes, and we had projects going on. . .but we did enjoy a meal at Crazy Cajun’s in the campus area. . .and lunch at Los Molcajetes in the neighboring town of Bryan. . .and we always make a pass by our favorite Tex Mex place. . .Chuy’s.  Their jalapeno ranch green sauce is so amazing, I’ve had to learn to make it at home.

If you have any questions about the information here. . .or would like to contact us you can do so at RTGMarketing@rtgmarketing.net

Full Time RV Travel–Photo of the Day–Eastern Lubber Grasshopper–Crystal River FL

DSC_7257

As we were walking along at Homasassa Springs Wildlife Park where we had gone to see the Manatees, Dave saw this Eastern Lubber Grasshopper sitting on this fence post. . .we had NEVER seen a grasshopper this color, it almost looks plastic. . .they are common in Florida. . .although they are not normally this bright from the pics I saw as I was researching them.

Full Time RVing–Tips and Tricks–Saving Money on Restaurant Meals

One of my favorite websites for finding restaurants all over the country is:

Restaurant.com - Most $25 Gift Certificates for on

They don’t feature the chain restaurants, which is what I love about them.  In order for a restaurant to be featured. . .they need to become a partner in the Restaurant.com program. . .which means these are normally locally owned establishments looking for ways to get more people in the door. . .and willing to offer discounts to make it happen.

Here's how it works. . .you go to their website and enter your email to receive their promotions.  I have been on their email list for about five years, and have never felt as though I was being inundated with stuff all the time. . .

Here is what an email looks like:

Restaurant.com email example

You already would get the $25 certificate for $10. . .but by using the promo code provided in the email. . .you receive an additional discount.  This one gets you the $25 for $3. . .normally they are available for $2. . .I guess since the holidays are closing in. . .they figure more folks will be eating out, thus demand will be up. . .

This is what the certificate looks like when you print it out:

2011-11-18_12-04-19_517

I purchased this $25 certificate for Crazy Cajuns in College Station TX for $2. . .

In order to get the $25 discount, we were required to purchase $35 worth of food. . .which is not hard to do at a seafood restaurant.

Different restaurants have different criteria, as you will see when you are doing your research on the website. . .there are larger $ value certificates available, which would be nice if you were going out with friends.

ONLY ONE CERTIFICATE IS ALLOWED PER PARTY OR TABLE. . .ALCOHOL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE DISCOUNTED PRICE!

2011-11-18_11-59-57_590

Yesterday, we took our certificate to Crazy Cajuns’ in College Station. . .here is what we got. . .

2011-11-18_12-28-13_272

One huge seafood platter. . .catfish, shrimp, oysters, stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab and a bowl of etouffe’ for $24. . .

2011-11-18_12-29-51_582

and a shrimp and oyster basket. . .which. . .because it was a lunch special included the drink. . .for $14. . .

So. . .for $38 worth of food PLUS tip. . .here is what we paid. . .

$ 2.00 – $25.00 certificate

$38.00 – complete meal and drinks for two

$ 5.00 – tip – may be higher in a fine dining establishment. . .this was basically an order at the counter place

$45.00 – total before discount

-$25.00 – value of Restaurant .com Gift Certificate

$20.00 – TOTAL

We’ve used their deals all over the place. . .and have never been treated any differently than if we were paying full price.

Check it out. . . if you’re going to eat out anyway. . .you may be able to save a few bucks here and there that you could use for other fun stuff. . .let me know what you think. . .we love to read your comments!

If you are a fan of Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. . .we often find those places featured on the website.
