Full Time RV Travel–Asheville NC–Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park

DSC_6173

Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park

225 Amboy

Asheville NC 28806

(828)254-4676

Located right on the banks of the French Broad River,  which bears the distinction of being the third oldest river in the world, the RV park itself is really great.

DSC_6172

As advertised, all of the sites have nice cement slabs, of which, half back right up to the river.  We could sit right in our living room, and watch the kayakers and tubers floating by. . .very enjoyable.

Rear View Window - RiverFront RV Park - Asheville NC - 23JUL2011

Now making a reservation, and getting checked in. . .that was another story.  Calling for the reservation was very casual. . .the guy simply asked for the dates of our stay, and a last name. . .said, okay then. . .and that was it.

When we got here, he just had our name written down in a spiral notebook. . .but hey, we had a reservation, and a place to stay. . .so it was all good.

The absolutely ONLY negative is that the freeway is RIGHT THERE. . .I mean within spitting distance, so sometimes, when the truckers use their exhaust brakes you can hear it, even from inside the RV. . .

DSC_6176

ALSO. . .when you exit the freeway. . .at the END of the exit ramp. . .IMMEDIATELY make a right hand turn into a PARKING LOT AREA that sort of looks like a combination feed store/garage/RV shop. . .THAT IS THE OFFICE. . .and that is where you will check in.  It is a ghetto. . .and smells horrible. . .like wet dog. . .with mess piled everywhere. . .and I do mean everywhere!. . .but once you get past all that. . .the RV park is great.

We did have a WEE bit of a problem with low wattage. . .BUT. . .keep in mind, it was mid summer. . .July, everyone is running their a/c on high I am sure. . .so I think it is just to be expected.

We figured out very quickly, even with 50 amps, to turn one thing off before you turned the next one on. . .and don’t try to run several big things at once.  That is not the norm when we have 50 amp, but we just adapted, and pretended we only had 30 amp, and it worked out great.

If we plugged something in, and the digital voltage meter squealed, we quickly unplugged it, before the SURGE PROTECTOR could shut us down. . .you DO have a surge protector. . .RIGHT?

Now, Asheville NC itself, is just fabulous. . .this has been my favorite stop so far!

I will share a few things we have done. . .but before we get started, let me save you a few bucks.  I found this nifty little trick too late. . .but maybe you can use it. . .and then I will feel better!

Check out the the GO BLUE RIDGE CARD. . .it looks like a pretty good deal.

By the time I discovered it, we had already paid the admission, and done some of the stuff. . .so it wouldn’t have saved us enough. . .but wow. . .anyway, check it out.

Okay, here are a few things we did. . .

We always look for the GRAY LINE TOURS wherever we go. . .we’ve never had a bad one. . .and they are always worth every penny!

DSC_6111

They took us to nine different areas in the city, which we probably would not have seen on our own.  NOTE THOUGH, that they DO NOT take you to the Biltmore Estate. . .you can only go to Biltmore Village, which is a fabulous shopping area that includes the fanciest McDonald’s in the world. . .

IMGP0988IMGP0985IMGP0989

My poor hubby does NOT usually eat at McDonalds, but he made the supreme sacrifice. . .and suffered through a burger, just to make me happy. . .(thanks Babe.)

We drove a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. . .

DSC_6102

where, even though it was raining. . .

DSC_6096

and the tunnels felt tiny. . .and dark!

DSC_6097

the views were magnificent. . .

DSC_6098

Another day, we drove to Chimney Rock State Park, which is about 45 minutes from Asheville. . .the big attraction there is to hike to the top of Chimney Rock. . .which is almost a mile high. . .

DSC_6080

The admission price is $12 per person, and they made sure to tell us the elevator was out. . .but there’s stairs all the way from the bottom to the top. . .right?. . .and we are in fair shape. . .right?  HA!  I thought I was going to die. . .but I made it. . .

CapRock State Park - CapRock NC - 3/4 mile climb to the summit - 21 JUL 2011

the views, which on a clear day, can be up to 75 miles, were just wonderful. . .but. . .I DON’T KNOW. . .

CapRock State Park - CapRock NC - 3/4 mile climb to the summit - 21 JUL 2011

unless you are under forty, and in fantastic shape. . .I think I would wait for the elevator to be fixed. . .seriously. . .it was a very, very difficult climb. . .especially in the heat. . .even with water. . .I will think long and hard, before I try a moderate to difficult trek again.

Back to Asheville. . .we finally made it to the Biltmore Estate. . .

DSC_6148

It was just magnificent. . .absolutely stunning.  There are no words or pictures that could ever describe the overwhelming presence of such a glorious place. . .inside and out.  You must see it for yourself. . .

All I can tell you is. . .it was worth every penny of the admission price of $49 per person (online ticket price) $59 at the door. . .and once I found out that they do not accept any government grants, but are totally self sufficient and self reliant, I was even more appreciative of such a wonderful experience.

We were advised to rent the audio equipment, which is available as soon as you enter the mansion for $10. . .I would say that was also a wise investment. . .it was less expensive than paying for a guided tour, and allowed us to go at our own pace, and enjoy the ambience of each room.

Overall, Asheville NC, has been a wonderful experience, and I am glad we came to see it. . .

One last note. . .the WNC (West North Carolina) Farmer’s Market is really great. . .so if you are here in your RV, make a trip by there, and support the local growers. . .really tasty stuff!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our trip as much as we’ve enjoyed experiencing it, and if you ever decide to head to Asheville, be sure to contact us. . .and we’ll tell you all the other details we left out here. . .have fun. . .

Safe travels,

Janice and Dave Evans

Full Time RV Travel–RV Park - Pigeon Forge TN

King’s Holly Haven RV Park

647 Wears Valley Road
Pigeon Forge, TN 37863
1-865-453-5352

What a wonderful convenient place to spend a few days.  Other than the fact that we were there in July, and there was no shade, it was a perfect base camp for exploring Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The pull throughs were easily accessible, and convenient to get in to.  We did not find the rate of $30 per nite too exorbitant for a popular tourist area.  We have paid much, much more.

The traffic in Pigeon Forge is horrendous, but we quickly discovered that we could cross over the main drag, and travel around town on Teaster Rd.  Veterans Rd also bypasses much of town, but is a little more difficult to get to.

Although the shuttle service will pick you up directly in front of the RV Park, we never used it, because they do not have a schedule.  We were told that you could wait as long as an hour for a shuttle to pick you up.  Also, there were no day passes for the shuttle. . .you needed to have exact change each time you got on, AND, you needed to change shuttle routes to get to different places.  For example, we could catch the shuttle in front of the RV park for 50 cents each, but then we would need to change shuttles to get to Dollywood.

I think the shuttle is a fabulous idea if it were better implemented.  We just chose to drive wherever we needed to go in Pigeon Forge.

However, Gatlinburg is a different story.  There is very little parking available in Gatlinburg, and what is available is expensive. . .so we parked the truck at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center, and paid the 50 cents each to ride the shuttle, which dropped us off at the aquarium.

We could then walk over to the “Parkway”, where Gatlinburg furnishes free shuttles to transport you from one end of town to the other.  Now that was a great way to get around.

As far as Gatlinburg itself. . .while it was a beautiful little town, it just seemed to be one tourist shop after another, with restaurants and galleries sprinkled in.  We stayed in town long enough to eat, ride the shuttle back and forth from one end of town to the other, and that was pretty much it for us.

I know there are many, many more things to explore, and I do plan to come back and Work Camp someday, so we can spend an extended time in the area.  There were many, many Work Campers at Dollywood. . .maybe we’ll come back and do that.

Speaking of Dollywood. . .one important note - at the time we were here, if you purchased your ticket online, you received a free meal voucher, which we thought was a great deal.  We chose to have the buffet meal at Auntie Grannys. . .valued at $16 each.  Also, if you wait until after 3:00 p.m. to show up on the first day, then your ticket is also valid the next day. . .which basically gives you a day and a half for the price of a one day ticket.

Verify this information before you go, as I am sure it is subject to change. . .

Great Smoky Mountains National Park was beautiful.  We thoroughly enjoyed the day we spent there.

As I said, there is a lot to do in the area, and you certainly need much more time than the three days we planned for this trip, but Holly Haven RV Park was a nice place to be while we were here.

If you’ve been to this area, share your experiences in the comment area. . .and let others know about any don’t miss activities that there may be.  We love when folks share great places to eat in an area we are not familiar with.

We were so fortunate that the folks in the white motorhome parked right there next to us were frequent visitors in the area, and were able to give us several great tips on places to visit, and shows they thought were worthy of seeing.

As a result, we drove straight out to Cade’s Cove in the National Park instead of following the crowd out there.  It was a wonderful scenic loop where wildlife is often sighted, and although I never saw it, there was a bear out in one of the fields, which of course drew a huge crowd of onlookers parked on the side of the road with binoculars and cameras out.

and a facebook friend told us to be sure we ate at the Apple Wood Grill, which we did.  The apple fritters they bring to the table with fresh apple butter to dunk them in were great. . .

So see, it’s great to share ideas. . .

Until next time. . .

Full Time RV Travel–RV Park-Lebanon TN

Lebanon Shady Acres RV Park

1639 Murfreesboro RD
Lebanon TN 37090

about two minutes from I-40, was an easy in and out for a quick overnite stay.

I was told they do not take reservations, that it is first come, first serve. . .but I would call (615)449 5400 in advance to check.  There did not seem to be that many empty sites in the section we were in.

We had an easy access pull through space. . .which someone designed correctly because they are angled, so no crazy maneuvers trying to turn in.  We had not planned to disconnect from the truck, but the site was just enough off level that we ended up doing so.

Overall, a nice quiet stay for $20.

Plenty of eating places within just a few minutes. . .not sure what else there is to do in Lebanon, but the historical downtown area looked interesting.

We will stay again, if we are in the area.

Full Time RV Living & Travel - How do you ever get started?

We have friends who think they would like to do the same thing we are doing. . .sell everything, and live full time in an RV. . .however, they have never even traveled in an RV, never spent the night in an RV . . .have no idea what it is they might be getting themselves into.

So what if they sell their house, and everything they own, and then they hate it? What do they do then?

Those are the questions I keep asking them. My biggest encouragement to them is to rent a big, huge, humongous motorhome for a month. . .the kind you think you want to live in, and go try it out. Yes, yes, I know it's expensive. . .but I would rather see you pay $3000 to rent a super nice Class A Diesel Pusher for a month, and go live the experience, than to see you sell everything, thinking that's the only way you could ever afford to own one, and then be stuck.

What do you think?

I read this article this morning which is what brought this to mind:   How to Make Full Time RVing Work for You

Full Time RV Living - How Do You Make Friends?

There is an art to making friends, but when you are traveling from place to place, it is sometimes difficult to establish long term friendships. It can be done if you are willing to make the effort, and that is the kicker; are YOU willing to make the effort?

If you are a shy, secretive, introverted soul, with self esteem issues, you may find it very difficult, and very lonely to be out on the road, away from familiar friends and family. You may need to make twice the effort of an outgoing personality, but it can be done.

There is absolutely no need to stay holed up in your RV with no outside contact, unless that is what you choose to do. RV'ers can be the most friendly people you have ever met, if you are willing to put yourself out there.

Let's discuss a few ways to get out and about.

As we have traveled around the country, we find that numerous campgrounds and resorts serve breakfast at a nominal charge. Get yourself over there, it doesn't matter if you are uncomfortable, just go. Surely you can find something that you will like to nibble on, and then, as you are enjoying your meal, ask the folks next to you, "where you guys from?" That is often a great conversation starter, but if not, ask, "are ya just on vacation?"

Don't be obnoxious, people don't want to feel that you are trying to pry their innermost secrets out of them, and Lord knows, in this day and age, with all the crazies on the news every night, it is wise to be careful, but most folks are just as shy as you are, and would enjoy having an interesting conversation.

Join in at pot lucks. I know, I know. I've heard all the horror stories about pot luck dinners. Get over it. Take something you like to eat, and if you are that picky, just eat that. No one is going to ask you why, and if they do, just say, "medical issues, watching my cholesterol, whatever." The point is, to put yourself out there with other RV'ers, and to be friendly.

I am amazed by the stories I hear, or read on RVing forums about how no one wants to visit, all they want to do is sit in their RV, and watch their TV. I have never had a problem finding someone in an RV park to have a conversation with. I'm sure that being a public servant, and meeting different folks everyday, contributes to my outgoing, outspoken personality, but really, get over yourself already.

There are lonely, hurting folks out there, just waiting for you to reach out to them, and perhaps that is what you are meant to do.

Written by: Janice L Evans

Do I make friends everywhere I go? Pretty much. Do I stay in contact with them? Not always, but I do always make the effort. Making the effort is all that is required. Beyond that, it is their choice. You can not force anyone to make the time for you, all you can do is be available when they reach out.

Evans Escapades–We must live a boring life

We have friends who write RV Blogs almost every day about the exciting things they do. . .museum tours, hikes on the beach, wonderful places to eat. . .so I’m trying to come up with something exciting to write about. . .you know. . .just to let everyone know what we’ve been up to.
Sorry to tell you. . .our life is just not exciting.  I mean, we are never bored. . .we love anything and everything, so just going on a hike is an adventure that we thoroughly enjoy. . .but it’s just not spectacular.
Nevertheless, for the sake of friends and family, I will share a few pics, so you will know where we are, and what we are up to. . .here goes. . .
IMGP0872
We made lunch for Dad and my brothers on Father’s Day weekend. . .then headed out. . .
July 2011 - Natchez Trace Parkway
Started up the Natchez Trace Parkway at Jackson MS. . .here’s more on those adventures.
Leiper's Fork TN - July 2011
not sure why the Duke’s of Hazzard Vehicles were parked on the side of the road in Leiper’s Fork, on the Natchez Trace, but it was interesting, so we took a picture. . .
Terminus Bridge ending the Natchez Trace Parkway - Nashville TN
and ended at the Terminus Bridge in Nashville. . .we didn’t drive every inch of it. . .but we drove enough to get a good feel for the experience.   I certainly would not want to have walked that almost 500 miles through the woods. . .
Carnton Plantation - Franklin TN - July 2011
Enjoyed meeting up with our good friends, the Portman’s who came all the way from Houston to spend the week with us. . .actually they love Franklin TN so much. . .any excuse was a good enough reason to be there. . .
IMGP0906
and they were right. . .
IMGP0903
it is a beautiful little town!
American Goldfinch - Peterson Field Guide to Birds - pg 405 - Franklin TN - July 2011
even the birds were extra beautiful. . .
DSC_5933
Spent a day touring Nashville. . .what can I say. . .it’s a big city, and the best way to see a big city is to take a tour. . .which we didn’t do. . .so I’m sure we missed lots.  We’ll come back some day when it’s a lot cooler. . .and spend more time exploring.
DSC_5915
and of course, I must have a shot of the Tennessee State Capitol Building for my State Capitol Album
DSC_5935
another shot for another album. . .this time my Bucket List Album. . .I would love to visit every National Park. . .all 247, or however many there are!

So what do you do at Mammoth Cave National park?
You hike. . .

and then you rest. ..
One little boy about four years old asked us why we both had sticks. . .I told him it was because we were old!

You enjoy the view. . .

hike some more. . .

Three and a half miles. . .uphill both ways.
Just glad I didn’t KNOW about the rattlesnakes ‘til we got back!

and of course. . .you MUST tour Mammoth Cave.
There are all sorts of tours to choose from. . .but we chose a photography tour of Frozen Niagara. . .

It was really great. . .

unless. . .

You’re a little claustrophobic. . .
So that’s about it. . .all the excitement we experienced for the past month. . .
and, if you’re not bored to tears. . .
you can see the rest of the pics. . .here

RV Maintenance is a Pain in the - You Fill in the Blank!

If you think you are going to buy a brand new RV, and therefore you are not going to have any RV Maintenance issues, let me assure you, that is not the case. Anytime you are pulling something weighing twenty thousand pounds down the highway, you are going to shake things loose.

After traveling the highways in the great state of Iowa, due to the horrific winter they had causing massive damage to their roads, we had things shake loose that we never dreamed of. The entire front facing of the kitchen slide out was lying across the couch. We have been traveling in this coach for six years, so we thought we had every possible thing fastened down, but this is just the nature of the beast.

If you can accept this aspect of RV'ing, you will be way ahead of the game, otherwise, you will stay frustrated all the time, wondering when the next disaster will strike.

Learning to read the date codes on tires, and having them changed at regularly scheduled intervals will help prevent blowouts. However, longtime RVing friends, who did everything right, still managed to have a faulty tire installed, which caused a blowout, and about $3000 worth of damage to their rig, so you can do all the right things, and still have a mishap.

The other tire issue we learned first hand is that, rims will crack. The tire shop owner said he sees cracked rims on RV's on a regular basis for several reasons. Rigs being overweight add additional stress to axles, tires, rims, etc. In addition, as stated before, rough roads, and then, think about the fact that when you are backing into an RV space, you are cranking the tires around, which is putting additional stress on your rims. It may be worth an extra trip around your rig to check out the condition of the rims. A $250 investment now, may save you from being stranded out on the highway later.

Another simple and inexpensive maintenance prevention is to purchase dirt dauber screens, and install them in your furnace and hot water heater openings. If only someone would have shared this little tidbit with us we could have prevented a $700 repair bill to our propane furnace. A $7 screen was all that would have been required to keep the little beasties out.

Full Time RV Living - What will you do when it's time to hang up the keys?

If you are a full time RV’er, you know there will come a day when it’s time to hang up the keys.

Your decision could be for any number of reasons, you’re tired of traveling, you miss having a house, you need to be close to doctors due to illness, any myriad of causes that will require the decision of no longer traveling full time.

When that time comes, do you have any plans, or ideas as to what you will need to do?

In a recent article Smart Money Magazine listed the Escapee’s C.A.R.E Program as a viable option .  The premise of the article was to discuss various retirement communities that are available, where you would be surrounded by others who have the same interests, such as artists, intellectuals, etc., in other words. . .niche communities.

Because I am a planner, always thinking ahead to the next project, (drives my hubby crazy) we have already researched the C.A.R.E. facility. . .but long before you are ready for that much assistance, you can join the Escapees Group.

Talk about a niche. . .they are definitely focused on RV’ers, and RV’ing.

We joined Escapees long before we ever started traveling, or needed their mail services.

It’s a great way to gain an RV’ing education!

Full Time RV Maintenance–Keeping the Door Locks in Working Order

Keeping things in working order, and repaired is a significant part of this lifestyle.  It’s all being jolted and bounced as we travel down the road from one fabulous place to the other, not to mention that all the outside components are being subjected to sun, wind, rain, dust, etc., etc.

When I read this article about RV Compartment Locks: Repair and Replacement I knew I should share it with you.  Russ DeMaris explains the entire procedure perfectly of how to take care of these little often overlooked, but necessary items on the outside of the RV.

We often find that the screws on our compartment locks are loose, and the door is not closing as tightly as it should.  After reading Russ’ article, I think doing a little maintenance on all the outside doors and locks will be a good project for the day, as we get the rig ready to roll to our next destination.

See you down the road,

Janice and Dave

Most RVs use the same key for all outside storage compartments. The entrance door lock isn't much better when it comes to RV security. Keep this in mind, especially when storing your RV for the off-season. Never leave valuables inside.
