Full Time RV Travel–Glen Rose TX

Glen Rose TX is another one those county seats with a beautiful courthouse. . .

It is also home to the Dinosaur Valley State Park, 

and Fossil Rim Wildlife Preserve,

both would be fascinating for kids. . .

but I was here to see the last “wild” river in Texas, the Paluxy River,

which runs right through the heart of town. . .

and has the claim of being the only “undammed” river in the state.

We enjoyed the river from the very aptly named Big Rocks Park. . .

as you can imagine, kids of all ages would enjoy climbing over, under,

and through this natural jungle gym. . .

Seeing as how we are now in the Prairies & Lakes Region of Texas, I was fascinated when my brother in law told me there are no natural lakes in Texas.  I guess that explains why the Paluxy River is the only “wild” river in the state. . .all the rest of them have been dammed to form “reservoirs.”

after checking for rattlesnakes,

I just stood back and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the river. . .

While we enjoyed our stay at Cedar Ridge RV Park

on the outskirts of Glen Rose. . .

I might actually advise staying 30 minutes away,

in Granbury TX. . .and driving over to Glen Rose for a day trip.

Full Time RV Living–Colorado River Preserve Invasion

Ahhhh. . .after our RV Repairs trauma drama of last week

we reported back to the Colorado River Preserve in Columbus. . .

where we were invaded by dozens and dozens of adorable, angelic Cub Scouts. . .

no seriously. ..they are so cute at this age.

They ran, they played, they rode bikes. . .

they explored the little creek behind our RV. . .

they attacked ant hills with a stick. . .

It was a hoot watching them in action.

This is only a small sampling of the tents spread along the river bank.

That night they built them a huge bonfire out of the wood

rescued from the low water crossing incident. . .I hope they got

good and warm and had thick sleeping bags in those tents. . .

otherwise they were gonna freeze their little tushies off. . .

I would have taken more pics of their antics. . .but given the day and age

in which we live, taking pics of other folks kiddos is probably not a good idea.

Today is drippy and rainy. . .so we are staying in,

and I’m trying a new one dish experiment.

Has anyone tried this stuff. . .called Simple Suppers?

I browned some andoullie sausage (cause anything cajun

requires it) and a chicken breast, and then just added this sauce

which includes the rice and everything. 

Reminds me of making Manwich. . .hmmm. . .

not too bad for a quick lunch.  Will I try it again. . .

not sure. . .I’ll get back to you on that.

 

Tonight we head to the clubhouse where new RV friends,

Mike and Candi are going to teach us how to play

cards and marbles. . .should be fun!

Full Time RV Travel - Thousand Trails Membership Parks - We Just Made the Plunge

I am not one to normally ever, ever do the membership thingy. . .we got burned once in one of those TimeShare dealies. . .and Thousand Trails always reminded me of that. . .sort of.  You had a home park. . .yada, yada. . . BUT. . .since ENCORE purchased Thousand Trails, and they are a publicly trade company, it's a whole different ballgame.

 

I researched forever, and asked a million questions. . .even read the Frequently Asked Questions listed on the TT website,  I finally decided that if I bought a Thousand Trails ZONE PASS for $499, I wouldn't have anything to lose.  It would be good for a year, we could stay in all the TT parks in the SouthEast ZONE, which was where we had decided to do our summer trip anyway, and we would get 30 days of camping free, which would be equal to paying for a month in an RV park.  

 

There didn't seem to be a downside, so we purchase the one zone, paid the $499, used it for all of 2011, stayed in KY, NC, VA, SC, FL and TX. . .and LOVED IT.  The only drawback was, if we wanted to go park to park, we could only stay four nights. . .OR. . .we could stay two weeks in one park. . .but then had to be OUT of the system for one week.  

 

So, knowing how much we were enjoying it. . .knowing that we planned to continue RV'ing (by God's grace) as least ten more years. . .we decided to upgrade to the ELITE program.  This will allow us to go park to park every three weeks. . .with sixty free nights of camping. . .and then $3 per night after the sixty. . .plus a host of other perks. . .cabin rental discounts, etc.

Full Time RV Living - Evans Escapades - Gearing up for Christmas Excitement!

What a difference a week makes.

After a quiet, and uneventful time last week, this week has been hopping. . .

Dave’s sister was performing at the Houston Heritage Society’s Candlelight Festival at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston, and got us free tickets for Saturday night. . . thanks Sis!

It was really great, and we highly recommend that you make plans to attend if you are in the area at Christmas time. . .Sam Houston Park is located on Buffalo Bayou with the downtown skyscrapers creating a backdrop.

There was a huge crowd, and a long line waiting to hear the Houston Boy’s Choir perform in this old German Church. . .

The boy’s choir has been performing at this event for over forty years. . .

This gentleman was set up on the porch of an old log cabin, letting the kids sign their names with a quill and ink. . .they really seemed to be enjoying the experience. . .

There are several different eras of Houston History represented in the restored homes in the park. . .this is the Staiti Home, circa 1913. . .and was where our sis was performing. . .they told me I couldn’t take pics inside. . .but here is a You Tube Clip of the performance. . .Mary is the gorgeous one on the far right. . .it’s only a couple of minutes long!

 

 

Now on to the rest of our week. . .

It’s time for the Kid’s Christmas Drama at church. . .so of course, we want to help wherever we can. . .which just happens to be the props department. . .

some of the Moms were going to finish glittering it up and such. . .

While I worked on the Gingerbread House,

Dave took on the Castle and did a really great job. . .

I wish I could show you, but my pic of the finished product didn’t come out. . .

I’ll take more Sunday Morning, so you can see how wonderful it turned out. . .

 

In addition to painting props, this week,

our son celebrated his 35th birthday, (good grief)

so on Wednesday night we had all of them over for soup and cornbread that I had made, and a delicious homemade cheesecake that his better half Lori had made. . .

 

it was wonderful, and worth every delectable calorie. . .

I can assure you that these poor old bodies are not used to all that exercise,

and we are feeling it today. . .

so we are taking it easy until our grandson’s basketball game this evening. . .

Full Time RV Living-Making Life Easier-or I Don't Think I Can Live Without It!

I loved this article – Ten Things That Make My Life In An RV Easier and I agreed with the premise of most of them. . .which made me think. . .

What are some things I consider absolute necessities?  Hmmmm. . .

ELECTRIC PRESSURE COOKER



an absolute necessity. . . especially if you plan to cook beans, rice, or pasta at altitude.  Ya can’t get water to boil up there. . .

but I use it even for everyday cooking.  It makes an awesome deep fryer (without the pressure portion of course.)

I excel in one pot meals, so I use it for that. . .often!

It’s just one of those things I’m glad I discovered. . .this is by RIVAL. . .and I found it at Big Lots for about $57. . .something like that.

INDUCTION BURNER



A glorified, and expensive hot plate, that requires pots, pans, and skillets that a magnet will stick to the bottom of, but I love it because, the pan heats up immediately. . .to a specified temperature that you can set. . .the burner itself does NOT get hot. . .I can use it inside or outside. . .and because I hate my RV stove, I can cook on it almost exclusively.

Induction Burners love, love, love cast iron, and I have a small round cast iron griddle to grill steaks on. . .fabulous combination.  I would love to have more cast iron to use on it. . .but alas. . .the weight. . .so. . .only the griddle. (sigh!)

LOCK N LOCK CONTAINERS



In my opinion, the ultimate in storage containers. . .they have a seal that prevents leakage, so they are fantastic for storing saucy items in the fridge. . .nothing’s gonna splash out!

Sometimes I can find them at Walmart, but lately I seem to have better luck finding them at those specialty Kitchen Stores in the outlet mall. . .you know which ones I mean!

Our gate guard friends have been writing about having a mouse invasion. . .they, the mice, especially love their doritos. . .as you can see, what’s left of my doritos are safely ensconced in plastic. . .not that I’m doing it to keep them from the mice. . .but just in case!  Our nemesis seems to be sugar ants. . .sometimes they pop up everywhere. . .keeps them out too!

I can’t think of any other “can’t live without” items at the moment. . .but I’m sure as soon as I push the send button, I’ll remember several more. . .

Ready To Go Full Time RVing-How do you find a full timer rig?

This was such a great question, that I thought I would share IT. . .and my answer. . .as my blog post today. . .leave a comment, and tell me your opinion. . .

We are looking to buy a 350 or 3500 4x4 truck and 5th wheel for fulltiming. I have been reading blogs and sites like IRV2 and can never find anyone to give direct advice. My question to you is, if you went today to buy a truck and 5er, what would you buy? I read where you said that the 5er you got was on your list and you knew it was of good quality. I have no way of knowing which ones are good quality. I would love to have your thoughts on this as you have been there and dont that. Thanks so much.

First off, let me say, thanks for reading our blog. . .and second off, let me say that as a FEMALE, anything I may tell you should be verified. . .ha ha. . .and you may be sorry you asked the question! : )  I ask hubby's opinion, but we've discussed all these issues so many times. . .he says exactly what I know he is going to say!

Now IMO, you should not pull anything longer than 30 feet with a 350 or 3500. . .yes I know it will pull it. . .that is not the question. . .will it STOP it?  and the second part of that discussion is. . .the insurance companies, at some point, are going to start cracking down. . .and if you are over your GCVWR and are in an accident. . .you probably are going to end up in court to get your claims covered. . .everytime we pass a truck weigh station, one of us will pose the question. . .How much longer before we hafta start pulling through those?

Next. . .if you are going to be a true Full Timer, as opposed to having a home to go back to, you need some space.  This is going to be your house. . .opposing slides in the living room are a necessity on our list. . .and at least one slide in the bedroom. . .a decent size shower that you can stand up and turn around in. . .full size closets, not shirt closets. . .and a pantry, or something that will serve as a pantry. 

Brands of full timer models. . .hard to say. . .so many have gone out of business. . .but Mobile Suites builds a beautiful rig, Montana (upper end only) are still building, I believe. . .we don't pay new prices for anything. . .but if you are going to, you may as well research the custom builders, and get exactly what you want.  You can find several listed in the back of Trailer Life Magazine

If you are searching for used, we liked Alfa, Hitchhiker, King of the Road, Newmar, wow, it's been so long ago. . .I'm kinda blank. . .I’m sure others can share choices in the comments section. . .

All rigs, including brand new, have their issues. . .it’s all part of the learning curve. . .so if you think you are going to buy a brand new one, and everything will be roses. . .think again. . .bouncing down the road at 60 mph shakes things loose. . .and some roads bounce more loose than others. . .plus rattle your teeth!

Hubby took a RV Inspection Class online from Mobile RV Academy. . .which taught him how to check out all the systems and look for problems.

I'll just throw this out there. . .we are currently in the process of purchasing a Class A Diesel Pusher. . .so our entire rig, 2002 Ford F550 Custom Thoroughbred RV Hauler, and 2003 Alfa Ideal 36 foot fifth wheel are going on the market. . .we're thinking our asking price will be about $52,000 for the entire package, and we will work from there.

Full Time RV Living–So What Do You Do About Church?

This is a question we are often asked by friends and family. . .but for us, attending church has not really been an issue at all.  We, well Dave, will usually just google our denomination, and the town we will be in, and there are usually even choices to be had.

We’re not really picky. . .I mean we believe what God said about, where two or three are gathered in My Name, there will I be in the midst of them. . .so even in the smallest, tiniest places, at least two or three show up. . .so we just join in, and enjoy the fellowship.

I was thinking about all this, because this past weekend, we had the golden opportunity, and privilege to be with friends at one of our favorite places, New Life Church at Round Rock TX.  Since we’ve known all them forever, we were discussing our summer trip, and all the different churches we had attended.

I admit, I actually hafta log the names and locations on my calendar, so I can look back to remember where we were, when. . .but some make a lasting impression. . .and the amazing thing is, once you start talking to folks, no matter where we’ve been, there are usually mutual acquaintances somewhere in our background. 

One guy stated, he felt like if he kept talking to us long enough, he would have found out we were kinfolk! LOL. . .we got a kick out of that one.  And we’re all God’s family. . .so in a sense. . .yes, we are kinfolk!

Full Time RV Living–Are you a GREEN RVer?

I was reading a blog post titled How To Make Your RV Travels Greener,  which made me think of my camping experiences growing up.

I never knew we were “green” campers.  I was just taught,

• You take out more than you brought in
• Leave your campsite cleaner than you found it
• Going to the store will not be an option, bring everything you need
• Be considerate of your neighbors

And now, all these years later, I find out that I was being “green.”

Full Time RV Living–Progression over the Years

I often receive notes from newbies who are just starting out in the lifestyle, or from wannabees who are anxious to get started in the lifestyle.  These notes always take me back to that nostalgic place that I lived in for about three years, that place where I researched the lifestyle, absorbing everything I could find about it, so I know exactly how these folks feel. . .the excitement. . .the fear. . .the feeling of not knowing exactly what we may be getting ourselves in to. . .oh yes, it all comes back.

Now we had camped for years, starting out in tents, progressing to pop ups, then to an 18 foot bumper pull, and finally, our ultimate vacation rig. . .a 30 foot Jayco Fifth Wheel with a slideout.

We were uptown then, living the good life. . .so when we decided to sell everything we owned, and it all happened a little quicker than we anticipated, we determined that we could live in the Jayco while we continued researching and shopping for a full time rig.

Oh my goodness. . .that WAS a transition. . .going from a four bedroom, three bath home to a less than 400 square foot rig that was designed to go on vacation in. . .and while it was the ultimate for what it was designed for, we quickly decided that having NO closets, NO storage. . .and especially, NO washer, dryer. . .just was NOT going to work.

We were both still working full time jobs, hubby on rotating shifts, and I worked a rotating week which almost always included working Saturdays.  Going to the laundromat was not on our list of fun things to do on our day off, so I started dropping the laundry off at one of those full service laundromats.  Oh I can feel the eyes rolling. . .LOL, but that was what we needed to do to survive, and we quickly decided living in survival mode was just NOT going to work.

Had we already been retired, we may have coped a little better, but in addition to our jobs, we also volunteered at our church and were in charge of a large Children’s Ministry Department and staff, so adding a lifestyle change in the midst of our other responsibilities was probably not the smartest decision. . .however, we had been researching FULL TIME rigs for quite a while, and had narrowed our choices down to about four brands which met our criteria.

Our criteria list consisted of basement air, two refrigerators, or at least one oversized one, washer/dryer, and a built in desk.  Not much to ask for right?  Dave would make the rounds of the RV lots on his day off, looking, looking, looking. . .as you can imagine, in Houston TX there were a lot of choices. . .and then, by the grace of God, there it was. . .the perfect rig. . .a brand that was on our list.  We knew they built quality full time rigs that would stand up to the rigors of the lifestyle. . .with absolutely everything on our wish list. . .and MORE.  God is so good! . . .and although we were looking for used,  this one was their RV show model. . .had never been lived in. . .but was being sold as a used unit. . .only took a few minutes to make that decision. . .and take that miracle home.

Now, almost ten years later, in the next phase of our RV journey as we begin searching for a motorhome, we still know we made a great decision. . .even with the trials and tribulations of the constant maintenance that comes with living in an RV full time. . .it has been the perfect “home”. . .and we would do it all over again. . .in a heartbeat!

Full Time RV Maintenance–This is Getting Old Fast

Well. . .as beautiful as it is. . .and as much as I love it. . .the “Beast” is acting beastly this week. . .

and is really starting to get on my last nerve!

A week ago Saturday, the master cylinder starting going out, and the brakes were mushy. 

Now of course this happened on a day that we had the RV attached,

and were halfway to a new destination, and of course the repair shops are closed on the weekends,

so we very carefully, and prayerfully continued on our way to Crystal River FL. 

Bright and early Monday morning Dave presented himself and the Beast at the local Ford Dealership.

A new master cylinder, new brake pads on the front, grind the rotors, yada, yada,

and a boatload of cash later, all was well, and we had an entire week to explore the Nature Coast of Florida. 

The Beast was performing beautifully, took us everywhere we wanted to go. . .not even one hiccup. . .

A week later, moving day again. . .get the RV all attached, headed for Pensacola. . .

get about thirty miles down the road, horrible, horrible shimmy.  What on earth?  

My first thought was, just having had front brake work done, that something was bad out of alignment,

or a tire was out of balance. . .it was that sort of vibration.  Stop. . .check everything. . .

no bubbles on any tires. . .nothing loose. . .weird. . .continue on.

Dave thinks it seems like a vacuum hose is off. . .since the next town has a Ford Dealership that is ACTUALLY open on Saturday. . .we decide we will stop by there. . .but alas, they only do oil changes on Saturdays. 

Ahhh. . .but you know how charming my hubby can be. . .he convinces them to just run a diagnostic. . .just so he’ll know if there’s a major problem.  Those guys were so nice. . .they dragged their laptop all the way out to where the truck was, since we couldn’t get it and the RV into the service bay. . .and determined that some electronic module thinga ma jiggy, which controlled the fuel injectors probably needed to be replaced. . .BUT. . .they assured us that it was not going to hurt to drive it, and that he was sure we would not get stranded on the side of the road.

Being the weekend, not wanting to be stranded in a podunk town in Florida, needing to be in Pensacola to meet up with our nephew on Monday, we decided to continue on. . . and here we are, thankfully without incident in beautiful Pensacola Beach FL. . .

Here it is. . .another Monday morning, and once again,

Dave has presented himself and the Beast at the local Ford Dealership. . .

oh Lord, please let it be something simple.

Now, I have no problem understanding that the Beast is almost 10 years old. . .that things must be replaced. . .

and Lord knows. . .a repair is still cheaper than a truck payment. . .

but please, if you could just have your temper tantrums when the RV is NOT attached. . .

that would be so great. . .really!  I promise we’ll get you whatever you need. . .

but being stranded on the side of the road with a big ole’ fifth wheel attached is just NOT a fun proposition. . .

been there, done that!

But on a brighter note. . .here we are in a campground on Gulf Shores National Seashore. . .across the street from a gorgeous beautiful,  white, sugar sand beach. . .crystal blue water. . .just fantastic.

Dave’s nephew Nick, his beautiful bride, Lindsey, and our two great nephews, Caden, 3 1/2, and Ashton, 6 months, will be here for lunch. . .Caden will be so grown up, we haven’t seen him since his first birthday,

and we will have the privilege of meeting Ashton for the very first time. . .it’s going to be a great day.

The last time we were in Pensacola,  my grandson, who is now seventeen,

wasn’t too much older than Caden is now. . .here’s a flashback. . .

My grandson Jordan, his Pa, and his Great Grammy, my wonderful mother in law on the beach. . .

right down from where we are staying this trip. . .

now. . .THIS is what I’m talking about, when I say I want to go to the beach. . .

Full Time RV Travel– Exploring Myrtle Beach South Carolina

As the name implies Myrtle Beach is a beach town. . .60 miles of beautiful beaches divided into basically three sections

 

North Myrtle Beach – laid back, quiet, mostly condos and private homes along the waterfront – nothing really exciting, and not too terribly many places to eat.  You almost need to go up to the main thoroughfare to find restaurants or fast food eateries. . .but free parking, and plenty of beach access. . .bring a picnic, and your own beach supplies, and enjoy a great day at the beach on this end of town.

Since Hurricane Irene was coming in, a news crew showed up while we were having lunch at one of the little beach dives on North Beach.

Our little waitress was having a fit.  She says, “Here come the vultures, blowing everything all out of proportion, and scaring people away.”  I can’t really disagree with her theory, and I’m sure when things like this affect your livelihood, it’s rather difficult to just sit back and watch.    As you can see, the beach was still pretty busy at this point.

Grand Strand – is where the Beach Boardwalk, the tourist shops, and lots of excitement is. . .

Since we are not huge beach enthusiasts, this is where we spent most of our time. . .just watching the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. . .

while having a fabulous shrimp and oyster po’boy at Dirty Dons.

Just so you know, we only saw paid parking in the Grand Strand area. . .you could park at the meters, or you could use the parking lots with the paid attendants. . .pretty pricey, but worth it if you are going to make a day of it.

South Beach – if you are here with kids this is probably where you will want to be.  All sorts of go cart rides, parasailing opportunities, mini golf,  sorry, didn’t think to get any pics of this area, since we just passed through.

Overall, we enjoyed Myrtle Beach, but would probably choose a less populated area when we return.  You know. . .it’s one of those things. . .you’re that close, you gotta go see it!

Myrtle Beach Discount Card – we didn’t purchase one of these as we were here in our RV, so did not did not need a discount on accommodations, and did not do any tours. . .but I’m sure if you are here with your family, and will be doing kids activities such as go carts or mini golf, and if you will be eating out often. . .it might be worth checking out.

Full Time RV Living–Being prepared for the unexpected

Three things have happened this week that have served as reminders to update my files.

First, a few hours after we left an RV Park in Louisa, VA. . .a couple we had met there sent an email to say that the fifth wheel at the end of our row had caught fire. . .and that by the time the fire department was through, she was sure their rig was a total loss. . .they were home and everyone got out safely, but still. . .their lives are going to be a mess for a while. . .especially if they were full timers.

So I’m thinking, how far are they from home?   Do they have their paperwork in order, or has it all been destroyed in the fire?  Did they not have a fire extinguisher on board, or did the fire just spread so rapidly, all they could do was get themselves out of the rig? 

When you hear of things like this, it reminds you again, how the events that happen in a moments time can change lives.

and then, the writers of two different RV Blogs that I read everyday wrote about losing friends. . .

One to cancer. . .and another to a freak accident while whitewater rafting.  The husband stated how thankful he was that his wife had taken the time to get things in order before she was so tragically taken from him.

Reading these things prompted me to follow through on the promise I have been making to myself for weeks to make sure our files are in order.

The first thing you need, in my opinion, is a fire proof/ water proof safe. . .especially if you live in your RV fulltime, and have all of your files with you. 

In this safe you should keep:

Birth Certificates

Passports

Life Insurance Information

Vehicle Titles

A backup copy of all the files on your computer. . .(I still need to do this one.)

and your WILL, your living will, and your medical directives. . .with instructions for your executor. . .

If you don’t have a will. . .at least do handwritten instructions and have them notarized.  Unless your estate is very, very complicated. . .this should suffice in a pinch. . .however, you should have a will drawn up just to save unnecessary grief.

Sorry to be so morbid today, but all of this has been on my mind. . .so I decided I would share my thoughts.  I started putting together a packet with instructions in case of some incident when we would go on a cruise. 

My brother in law is listed as the executor of our estate (such as it is). . .and I would always tell him. . .our “death packet” is in this drawer or wherever it happened to be.  We always had a chuckle over it. . .but really, if something happens to you when you are RV’ing far from home, it would be good for someone to know your wishes.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten things that are important to others. . .if you have any thoughts please share them by leaving a comment. . .it may be helpful to someone else. . .

Full Time RV Travel–Asheville NC–Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park

Located right on the banks of the French Broad River,  which bears the distinction of being the third oldest river in the world, the RV park itself is really great.



As advertised, all of the sites have nice cement slabs, of which, half back right up to the river.  We could sit right in our living room, and watch the kayakers and tubers floating by. . .very enjoyable.



Now making a reservation, and getting checked in. . .that was another story.  Calling for the reservation was very casual. . .the guy simply asked for the dates of our stay, and a last name. . .said, okay then. . .and that was it.

When we got here, he just had our name written down in a spiral notebook. . .but hey, we had a reservation, and a place to stay. . .so it was all good.

The absolutely ONLY negative is that the freeway is RIGHT THERE. . .I mean within spitting distance, so sometimes, when the truckers use their exhaust brakes you can hear it, even from inside the RV. . .



ALSO. . .when you exit the freeway. . .at the END of the exit ramp. . .IMMEDIATELY make a right hand turn into a PARKING LOT AREA that sort of looks like a combination feed store/garage/RV shop. . .THAT IS THE OFFICE. . .and that is where you will check in.  It is a ghetto. . .and smells horrible. . .like wet dog. . .with mess piled everywhere. . .and I do mean everywhere!. . .but once you get past all that. . .the RV park is great.

We did have a WEE bit of a problem with low wattage. . .BUT. . .keep in mind, it was mid summer. . .July, everyone is running their a/c on high I am sure. . .so I think it is just to be expected.

We figured out very quickly, even with 50 amps, to turn one thing off before you turned the next one on. . .and don’t try to run several big things at once.  That is not the norm when we have 50 amp, but we just adapted, and pretended we only had 30 amp, and it worked out great.

If we plugged something in, and the digital voltage meter squealed, we quickly unplugged it, before the SURGE PROTECTOR could shut us down. . .you DO have a surge protector. . .RIGHT?

Now, Asheville NC itself, is just fabulous. . .this has been my favorite stop so far!

I will share a few things we have done. . .but before we get started, let me save you a few bucks.  I found this nifty little trick too late. . .but maybe you can use it. . .and then I will feel better!

Check out the the GO BLUE RIDGE CARD. . .it looks like a pretty good deal.

By the time I discovered it, we had already paid the admission, and done some of the stuff. . .so it wouldn’t have saved us enough. . .but wow. . .anyway, check it out.

Okay, here are a few things we did. . .

We always look for the GRAY LINE TOURS wherever we go. . .we’ve never had a bad one. . .and they are always worth every penny!



They took us to nine different areas in the city, which we probably would not have seen on our own.  NOTE THOUGH, that they DO NOT take you to the Biltmore Estate. . .you can only go to Biltmore Village, which is a fabulous shopping area that includes the fanciest McDonald’s in the world. . .



My poor hubby does NOT usually eat at McDonalds, but he made the supreme sacrifice. . .and suffered through a burger, just to make me happy. . .(thanks Babe.)

We drove a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. . .



where, even though it was raining. . .



and the tunnels felt tiny. . .and dark!



the views were magnificent. . .



Another day, we drove to Chimney Rock State Park, which is about 45 minutes from Asheville. . .the big attraction there is to hike to the top of Chimney Rock. . .which is almost a mile high. . .



The admission price is $12 per person, and they made sure to tell us the elevator was out. . .but there’s stairs all the way from the bottom to the top. . .right?. . .and we are in fair shape. . .right?  HA!  I thought I was going to die. . .but I made it. . .



the views, which on a clear day, can be up to 75 miles, were just wonderful. . .but. . .I DON’T KNOW. . .



unless you are under forty, and in fantastic shape. . .I think I would wait for the elevator to be fixed. . .seriously. . .it was a very, very difficult climb. . .especially in the heat. . .even with water. . .I will think long and hard, before I try a moderate to difficult trek again.

Back to Asheville. . .we finally made it to the Biltmore Estate. . .



It was just magnificent. . .absolutely stunning.  There are no words or pictures that could ever describe the overwhelming presence of such a glorious place. . .inside and out.  You must see it for yourself. . .

All I can tell you is. . .it was worth every penny of the admission price of $49 per person (online ticket price) $59 at the door. . .and once I found out that they do not accept any government grants, but are totally self sufficient and self reliant, I was even more appreciative of such a wonderful experience.

We were advised to rent the audio equipment, which is available as soon as you enter the mansion for $10. . .I would say that was also a wise investment. . .it was less expensive than paying for a guided tour, and allowed us to go at our own pace, and enjoy the ambience of each room.

Overall, Asheville NC, has been a wonderful experience, and I am glad we came to see it. . .

One last note. . .the WNC (West North Carolina) Farmer’s Market is really great. . .so if you are here in your RV, make a trip by there, and support the local growers. . .really tasty stuff!
