Now, don’t get me wrong. . .
there’s no wrong way to go about seeing “All Things Lincoln”
in the City of Springfield’s Living History Museum. . .
Everywhere you go in the Downtown area is another wonderful discovery. . .
however. . .
having ran our little legs off for 5 days straight. . .
we wish we would have done things in this order. . .
just because we think it would have enhanced the experience. . .
#1 - the Lincoln Home National Historic Site
this is where Lincoln’s life in Springfield began. . .where the story started. . .
#2 – Lincoln – Herndon Law Offices
where Mr Lincoln began to make a name for himself
where Mr Lincoln argued cases before the Supreme Court,
and began his political career. . .
even though the building is just a replica of the original,
there’s still a fabulous story to be told inside those walls. . .
#4 – The Great Western Depot – where President Lincoln elect
gave his farewell address to the people of Springfield from the back of the train. . .
Go inside, and see the memorabilia. . .we regret missing that part,
but we thought it was a private law office. . .and learned differently later.
and then perhaps the Presidential Museum and Library. . .
we saw those first, and loved EVERYTHING about them. . .
but, I really think we could have appreciated them even more. . .
had we seen the previous sites I have outlined. . .
be sure to see the model replica of the FUNERAL TRAIN
at the Presidential Library. . .no pics were allowed. . .
but it was quite something to see. . .
followed by a stop at the Amtrak Station where the funeral train arrived in Springfield. . .
and then to Oak Ridge Cemetery and Lincoln’s Tomb. . .
We really hope you enjoy all of Springfield as much as we have,
and will drop us a line to share your experience. . .
DON”T miss the Springfield Convention and Visitor’s Bureau
where you can pick up brochures and info for all these
wonderful venues. . .and your complimentary parking pass
courtesy of the City of Springfield. . .
and of course. . .Springfield is the Capitol of Illinois. . .
so a tour of the State Capitol Building is always in order. . .
This may have been my favorite stop of the summer. . .
Enjoy,
Janice and Dave
